A Gorkha National Liberation Front’s (GNLF) member was found dead in Sonada, 15 kilometres away from Darjeeling today. Local sources shared that the man, Tashi Bhutia was shot dead around midnight.
This has intensified the unrest in the hills since the people claim that the young man was shot by the police’s bullets. The police, however, has denied their involvement in the incident.
Locals of the area marched on the streets with Tashi Bhutia’s body in the morning. They took the Sonada Police Station in a siege, forcing police officials to resort to tear gas shells.
Vandalism in Sonada Police Station has been reported. The rally of the protesting people also set a traffic police kiosk on fire. Moreover, reports of arson at Sonada Railway Station has also surfaced.
Currently, paramilitary forces have been deployed in the area.
