Darjeeling, July 9: Darjeeling has been witnessing extreme Monsoon rains in the last few consecutive days. These rains have also triggered landslides that has been destroying roads, houses and even costing lives.
Early morning, it was reported that because of the heavy downpour overnight in the Hills, landslides occurred at various parts of Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong. In one such landslip, a portion of NH 55 running through the Ghayabari- Tindharia area washed away damaging the Toy Train Railway tracks. Due to this, the Siliguri-Darjeeling Toy Train Service has been suspended. Traffic has also come to a grinding halt with several tourist vehicles getting stranded due to the landslide.
Although the relief work to remove the debris has already commenced, however it has not yet been cleared when the Toy Train Service will resume. The Indian Meteorological Department, Regional Centre Kolkata has predicted more rains for Darjeeling and other districts of North Bengal till July 12. An orange warning has been sounded for the North Bengal districts of the state for July 8, July 11-12. A red warning has been sounded for the same for July 9-10, 2019.
