Torsa Tea Garden of Dooars closed, 700 workers unemployed

Alipurduar, 21th October: The Torsa Tea Garden of Dooars was closed by the management, today, without any prior notice. Due to this, 700 workers have become unemployed. According to sources, when the workers reached the Tea Garden this morning, they noticed that the plantation was closed and the management was absent. The workers, then, blocked the SAARC road to Bhutan and staged a protest.

The workers stated that a meeting was held in Dooars Kanya on September 28th regarding the puja bonus before the Durga Puja. At the meeting, an 18.5% bonus was demanded by the workers, while the plantation management was willing to give only an 8.5% bonus. However, due to the lack of mutual agreement between the workers and management of the Tea Garden, a meeting was to be held, today, in Siliguri. In the said meeting decision regarding the first bonus of Diwali was to be held, but before the meeting could take place, the management allegedly closed the plantation.
