Shahid Diwas or ‘the Martyrs Day’ is celebrated every year on July 27 in the Hills to pay tribute to pro-Gorkhaland activists killed in the Gorkhaland Movement. The GNLF and other hill parties today observed Shahid Diwas in various places of the Hills including Darjeeling, Kurseong, Mirik and Kalimpong. To pay homage to those who lost their precious lives for the demand of a separate state, Gorkhaland, the people visited altars constructed in various places in memory of the martyrs and offered flowers and khadas.
According to the information given by our correspondent from Darjeeling, Shahid Diwas was celebrated on Saturday, July 27, at Sumeru Manch under the aegis of GNLF Darjeeling Mahakuma Committee. On this occasion, Central Leaders of GNLF, in their address, claimed that the contribution and sacrifice of the martyrs will not go to waste and claimed that one day a separate state would be formed. Recalling that GNLF was the first to launch the Gorkhaland agitation on the Hills, they mentioned that it would be formed under the proper guidance of GNLF, itself. In addition to this, the speakers demanded that the GTA be dissolved as soon as possible and demanded a permanent political solution in the hills. Praising the various work done by Darjeeling MP Raju Bista in the last two months, he mentioned that more such works will be established in the future for the hilly region. GNLF’s leaders and party supporters in large numbers attended the Martyrs’ Day event in Darjeeling’s Sumeru Manch.
Likewise, in various places of the town, they also laid flowers on the altar commemorating the Martyrs. The Martyrs Day event was also observed by the residents of GNLF’s Pankhabari and Giddha Pahar. On the other hand, on the occasion, a tribute was paid on the memorial of Tashi Bhutia and a floral wreath upon her reminiscence.
