A young member of the Gorkha National Liberation Front (GNLF) was shot dead in Sonada around midnight. Locals and leading parties of the hills have alleged that the man, Tashi Bhutia, was shot by the police.
“The police did not fire any shots in Sonada. Instead, they have been using the principles of tolerance and peace to tackle the violence that has been raging there,” said the state’s Tourism Minister, Goutam Deb.
The minister also expressed grief over Bhutia’s death and stated that the police has been controlling the situation with peaceful approaches.
A clash ensued between the people and the police as the locals carried Bhutia’s body and took Sonada Police Station in a siege. Reports of vandalism and arson have been surfacing ever since.
