SILIGURI: Netaji Subhas Chardra Bose foundation has submitted a memorandum to the District Magistrate of Jalpaiguri district to raise a Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s memorial at Pandapara, in Jalpaiguri. The memorial will compromise of a museum dedicated to the heroic freedom fighter, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose and a statue of him will also be erected.
Pandapara holds a significant place in the history of the freedom struggle of India. It was from Pandapara that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose had started the Quit India Movement. The people of the region has been requesting the government to establish a memorial of Netaji from many years but their pleadings were not heard until now.
A locality in Pandapara, known as Harijan Basti today, is the place where the Bengal Provincial Congress Session was held in 1939. Presently, the area has become a dumping ground for garbage and lots of pigs can seen here. The locals demand that the place should receive the due respect which should be given to this historic site.
The president of Azad Hind Library, Alok Mukherjee said that it will be a very good development for Pandapara to construct a children’s museum in the memory of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
