The Kojagari Lakkhi Puja is being celebrated today in various places of Bengal, Odisha and the other eastern states. The Hindu goddess of wealth and fortune, Lakshmi, is worshipped till date since its first start during the Vedic period.
After the conclusion of the Devi Paksha, Godess Lakshmi is worshipped in every residence of the Bengali community on Kojagari or Sharad Purnima i.e. the harvest festival celebration marking the end of monsoon season. The goddess is worshipped with fruits and sweets as the offerings.
Many people are unaware of the meaning of the word Kojagari, which actually translates to ‘who is awake?’. According to the Puranas, Goddess Laxmi arrives to see who is awake after the worship and showers wealth and prosperity upon the people who are awake during the time.
