Siliguri, July 11 (Shubhankar Pal): Direct road links from Sevoke-Siliguri, Mungpong and Kalijhora snapped on Thursday due to a heavy landslide triggered by incessant rain. Likewise, many tourists as well as the locals are stranded in the Siliguri-Dooars traffic.
The heavy downpour on Wednesday night caused a number of landslips along the NH 31 and NH 10. The Hills have been witnessing extreme Monsoon rains in the last few consecutive days. These rains have also triggered landslides that have been destroying roads, houses and even costing lives.
Yesterday, a tourist vehicle went missing when the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into the swollen river Teesta river near Coronation Bridge at Sevoke, around 30 km away from Siliguri. The tourists were headed for Sikkim from Siliguri when the driver lost control and the vehicle fell into the river, it is learnt. Sources said the tourists had hired the Innova car from a travel agency in Siliguri. A search operation was initiated by the Police, NDRF, disaster management personnel, fire brigade personnel, and rafters. Many tourists are returning half way from the destination due to the blockage of the roads. Incessant downpour has disrupted normal life and have been causing water-log in low-lying areas. Weather experts have warned of ‘extremely heavy’ rainfall in the next few days.
