To protest against the Government’s dialect policy of making Bengali mandatory in schools, the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha has stirred the hills by trying to coax them to go on a power-cut strike during the CM Mamata Banerjee’s four-day tour.
According to sources, the protest entails that the electricity of all houses, offices and markets should be shut down for two hours every day; from 6pm to 8pm. The protest will particularly rage during the CM’s tour to Mirik and Darjeeling.
“We are going to protest against the new dialect policy until the CM hears and feels our discomfort,” said Vinay Tamang, GJMM’s Union Committee Secretary at a public meeting in Mirik. “If the state continues to impose Bengali on us, we will continue to protest it.
