Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is scheduled to begin on February 3rd and conclude on February 11th, in the span of which 23 papers will be examined.
GATE is jointly conducted for the National Coordination Board (NCB) by seven IITs along with Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Candidates have various career opportunities after clearing the exam. Admission to Master’s and Doctoral programs after clearing it are opted by those who are willing to pursue higher education. For those who want to begin their careers, the exam opens up the possibility of applying to various PSUs that use GATE score obtained by candidates for evaluation and screening.
Once a student clears Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, various avenues open up in terms of opportunities, some of which have been discussed below.
GATE opens up specialization opportunities
Students may opt for specialization in a particular stream after appearing and clearing the exam. Examples of specialization that a student may opt for are Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Food Technology, Computer Science & Information Technology, Agricultural Engineering, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Mathematics and others.
- Tech. options after GATE
After clearing Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, students may directly apply for M.Tech in the Indian institutes of technology, making it the most straightforward route to study a Master’s degree in an IIT. A good score would provide a student the opportunity to avail several benefits including a monthly amount of money as stipend while studying in the IIT. Competing the M. Tech successfully would mean further opportunities in the form of jobs with a good pay package for a student. Students who failed to clear JEE may rest assured that they have yet another shot at studying in the IITs through GATE. Some of the universities that accept gate scores for a Master’s degree are IITs, NITs, IISc, BIT Mesra and Delhi College of Engineering.
Jobs through GATE in PSUs
Candidates with good scores may apply to various PSUs that recruit on the basis of GATE. While a government job will provide a candidate with a sense of security and purpose, Public Sector Undertaking jobs have their own perks. The scores are considered by above 200 PSUs in the country. Some of them are Odisha Power Generation Corporation, Mazagon Dock Ltd., Punjab State Power Corporation Ltd., Ircon International Ltd., THDC Ltd., Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, National Highways Authority of India, Airport Authority of India, National Thermal Power Corporation Ltd., Oil and Natural Gas Commission, Coal India Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd, Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. and Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
Research options after GATE
The score obtained by a student in GATE is valid for two years after the exam is cleared. After completion of the master’s degree, one may choose to begin a research career through Junior Research Fellowship. Research is a comparatively less explored domain in our country. However, a career in research has huge potential for growth. Research fellows generally have a stable job with a good stipend and a high level of job satisfaction.
Sponsorship programs through GATE
GATE scores may enable candidates to be eligible for sponsorship programs offered by various government bodies. If a candidate is already working with a government organization such as ISRO, BRAC, Indian defense services, DRDO or Doordarshan or such other organizations that offer sponsorships, the examination will open the door for sponsorships to a candidate with a good score. There are certain restrictions however, that a candidate must work for the organization for a bond period after completion of his or her M. Tech, but that should not be a big issue for any candidate given the overall advantages of the GATE score and the degree obtained.
Scope of studying abroad after GATE
A good GATE score is a valid way to enter some recognized universities abroad. A 90th percentile or more would gain a student admission in Nanyang Technological University (NTU, Singapore) as well as National University of Singapore (NUS) to pursue a Master’s degree. These universities along with some others ranking within the top twenty globally, consider GATE scores as one of the parameters for a student to get admission. Apart from these, RWTH Aachen in Germany and TU Munich consider the scores for admission. Although these universities have not made GATE scores mandatory, it is however recommended that potential candidates take the exam and provide a score, which eases the admission process.
Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering is a way to unlock all the opportunities listed above and can be a way to begin an exciting and secure career for any engineering student. The importance of the exam for any engineering student looking for a little more than a B. Tech degree from their student life cannot be stressed enough. An early start of preparation, diligent study and a confident attempt at the exam will ensure a good score for any serious student.
