Blind girl seeks for government facilities

Alipurduar, 12th September: 19-year-old Priya Debnath, a resident of Thanupara village of Bhatibari Gram Panchayat in Alipurduar No. 2 block, is blind since birth. Priya lost her father at the age of 3 years, and a few days later, her mother passed away too. At present, Priya’s uncle, Chandan Debnath, is looking after her and her sibling, who will appear for board exams this year. Priya has not received any assistance from the government which is making it difficult for the family to make ends meet as they are already under financial crises.
Priya’s uncle, who works as labor in Bhutan, stated that although Priya falls in the 100 percent disabled category and has a medical certificate in this regard, she has not received any government facilities until now. Despite discussing the matter with the Gram Panchayat office and BDO office, no allowance was provided.
When asked about the matter, Swapan Debnath, Deputy Head of Bhatibari Gram Panchayat assured that Priya’s allowance will be provided soon. He further stated that all her documents have been sent to the Block Office from the Gram Panchayat.
