Cooch Behar, 3rd October: The Cooch Behar Additional District Sessions Court, today, sentenced an active member of Al-Qaeda to rigorous imprisonment of 7 years. He will also have to pay a fine of Rs 5000. In case of non-payment of fine, his imprisonment period will be increased by 6 months.
It was reported that the active member of Al-Qaeda, identified as Swapan Sarkar, was convicted on the 1st of October by the Cooch Behar Additional District Sessions Judge Sukumar Sutradhar. Today, the punishment for him was announced. On October 28, 2014, Swapan Sarkar, an active member of Al-Qaeda, had various facts extracted and printed at a computer center in the Dharamshala area of Cooch Behar. An Al Qaeda magazine named 'Inspire' was also recovered from his possession.
The magazine 'Inspire' mainly contained the procedure to manufacture a bomb, which could be used for destruction purposes. Based on a tip-off from secret sources, the Police immediately arrested him on the same day. This type of punishment for an active member of Al Qaeda is the first of its kind in North Bengal. Since the matter was under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the high officials of the government had investigated the matter.
