Kurseong, 20th August: Every year, 20th August is celebrated as Nepali Basha Manyata Diwas, as on this day in the year 1992, the Constitution of Indian gave recognition to the Nepali language in the Eighth Schedule. Today is regarded as an important day for Indian Gorkhas living all over the country and the world.
Indian Nepali (Gorkha) around the country celebrated the 27th Nepali Basha Manyata Diwas today to commemorate the struggle of those visionary and revolutionary Gorkhas who fought for the Nepali language. Likewise, residents of Kurseong observed the 27th Nepali Basha Manyata Diwas on Tuesday, under the banner of Gorkha Jan Pustakalay at the Town Public Building located at New Market. The program was organized under the Chairmanship of Purna Gurung Nirupam and GTA Chairman Anit Thapa was present as the Chief Guest. Various cultural events were also organized under the guidance of Rishi Rai.
Addressing the gathering, GTA Chairman Anit Thapa said that if the students had not come to celebrate the occasion, then there would have been a gathering of only 8-9 people. Thapa emphasized that the Nepali Basha Manyata Diwas should be celebrated like a festival around the region and honor the struggles by the Gorkha activists for the Nepali language recognition.
