New Delhi/ Gangtok 13th August: Ten MLAs of Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) joined BJP in presence of its working president JP Nadda and general secretary Ram Madhav at the party’s headquarters in New Delhi on Tuesday. This comes as warning signs for former Sikkim Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who is also the head of SDF.
Chamling is one of the longest serving chief ministers of Sikkim and also of India. But this year, Chamling lost his power in Sikkim to P. S. Golay, the leader and founder of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM). In 2019 Sikkim Assembly election the SKM won 17 seats in the 32-Member Assembly while the SDF could bag 15 seats.
Till now, Sikkim was the only state in Northeast India where the BJP was not in power.
