Two arrested in Siliguri in connection with snake venom smuggling

SILIGURI: Two persons were arrested today afternoon from Jalpaimore in Siliguri on charges of smuggling processed snake venom.
The forest department nabbed Khidirpur High School head teacher Sanjib Sarkar and Uttar Mahadevpur F.P. School assistant teacher Ashim Adhikary following an operation. They were arrested after observing their movements for several months.
Baikanthapur Division Acting In-Charge Divisional Forest Officer Bidyut Sarkar confirmed the arrest was made from Jalpaimore Siliguri.
The two are the kingpins of a gang arrested with about Rs.300 crore processed snake venom in five bullet proof jars in October last year. During the operation the forest department had arrested five people with the snake venom brought from Bangladesh.
According to highly places sources in the forest department, Sarkar and Adhikary were trying to escape to a secret location. They will be presented before the Jalpaiguri Court.
Several more arrests will be made, added the source.
