TMC slams decision, takes on Governor
The Trinamul Congress on Sunday condemned the decision of the State Election Commission to postpone the counting of votes of the elections to Bidhannagar-Rajarhat and Asansol civic bodies and the 16 wards of Bally that were incorporated in Howrah Municipal Corporation, even as it lashed out at the state Governor for his comments on the issue.
The Trinamul will take to the streets on Monday to protest against the commission’s decision, party secretary general Partha Chatterjee said Chatterjee said that on Monday from 10 a.m. Trinamul workers will stage a sit-in demonstration in front of the SEC office on Rawdon Street. Mayor Sovan Chatterjee will lead the protest.
Chatterjee said the election commissioner was forced to take the decision by the CPI-M, Congress and BJP. He said: “Yesterday he was unaware of any incident and today after 5 p.m. he took the decision. We will fight for the democratic right of the voters who yesterday came out to vote defying the Opposition’s violence.”He also condemned Saturday’s attack on reporters but said the reporters ‘to some extent’ crossed their limits. The reporters had no right to enter the booths, he said.
Commenting on the poll violence Governor K N Tripathi on Sunday said that the SEC should take steps after looking into every aspect. It need not bother whether the decision goes against any political party, he reportedly said.
TMC spokesman Derek O’Brien subsequently tweeted: “Unfortunate… When governors start playing dirty politics.” He also tweeted a statement of Partha Chatterjee that reads: “Has the Raj Bhavan become a BJP party office? The Governor is acting in a way unbecoming of his high office.”
