SILIGURI: The Bharatiya Janata Party filed an FIR against the Shahi Imam of Tipu Sultan Mosque, Kolkata at Siliguri Police Station on Wednesday for making offensive statement against PM Modi on January 7.

West Bengal BJP Secretary Rathindra Bose filed the FIR at Siliguri P.S. against the Imam, also called Moulana Nurur Rahman Barkati, as he had declared fatwa “offering a reward of Rs.25 lakhs to anyone who will be able to cut off the beard of our P.M. Narendra Modi and also to shave his head and smear him with black ink.”

Speaking to reporters Bose said, “Such offensive statement can cause discord amongst people. It can also lead to disharmony.”

The Imam had declared the fatwa during a Press Conference organised by Idrish Ali, M.P. and others, of TMC at Kolkata Press Club.

ACP II East Achinta Gupta said, “We need approval from senior officers before accepting the FIR.”

In the mean time, the state BJP Secretary informed the party will approach the Siliguri Police Commissioner to accept the FIR. If the FIR is not accepted even after approaching the police commissioner, a case will be filed at the court against the Imam.
